Francisco Ortiz Pardo According to a joint press release by the navy and government of Veracruz, all of the deceased are thought to be victims of the Zetas drug gang.

The navy was led to the grave after detaining Juan Francisco Alvarado Martagon, "The Chicken H," as he tried to bypass a military checkpoint. The suspect was flagged for operating a vehicle without a license plate, but upon interrogation confessed to being a lookout for the Zetas.

Martagon mentioned two specific sites that had been used to dump the bodies of those killed in rival drug gangs. According to an Associated Press report, Veracruz has been a popular site for battles between the Zetas and the Sinlaloa cartels.

The graves were located in two separate ranches in Acayucan, about 540 kilometers southeast of Mexico City. On Tuesday night the attorney general's staff excavated the remains. The bodies found were severely decomposed.

Additional searches were conducted this morning, but revealed no new findings.
